  • The Development of Eczema in Children.
    10/3/2008
The child with poison ivy … the operating room nurse who develops scaly skin on her hands from frequent washing with potent antibacterial soaps … the elderly gentleman with crusty-looking, thickened skin on his arms and elbows … the young woman who seems to always get an angry neck rash neck after a cold … these people all have one thing in common: they are suffering from eczema. Fish oil contains both eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Both of these are members of omega-3 family of fatty acids and are different from the omega-3 fatty acids found in oils from vegetable sources. Eczema in infants has increased dramatically in western societies over the past few decades. It is thought that environmental and dietary factors may affect the risk of developing eczema. A recent study sought to investigate how some of these factors affect the risk for eczema at one year of age.

According to a new study published in the Archives of Neurology, pain appears to be more common in individuals with Parkinson's disease than in those without, suggesting that pain is associated with the condition.

Bacopa or water hyssop, is a plant used since approximately the sixth century A.D. in the traditional Ayurvedic Medical System of India as an extract with cognition-enhancing benefits. Cognitive function is the term used to describe a person's state of consciousness (alertness and orientation), memory, and attention span. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial evaluated the effects of standardized bacopa extract on cognitive performance and its safety and tolerability in healthy elderly subjects.

  • Massage Therapy to Improve Pain and Mood in Patients with Advanced Cancer.
    9/22/2008
When pain presents itself, one’s first instinct is to find relief from the pain. And while pain is the number one reason why people seek medical advice, it is interesting to note that everyone is an individual in regard to their own personal relationship to pain. Massage therapy is the treatment of manipulating soft tissue in muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin, joints, connective tissue, lymphatic vessels, or organs of the gastrointestinal system. The concept of using massage therapy to relieve pain and improve mood has only previously been tested in small studies with variable quality.
